Beast Within (2008)

REVIEWS - Movie Reviews

Not to be confused with THE Beast Within, where a girl gets diddled by a giant katydid, this is merely Beast Within, where the sensitive Robert goes to his grandpa’s country house to settle the geezer’s estate, bringing along the uptight, sweater-vest-wearing Eugene and the cool, leather-jacket-wearing Patrick.

Watch the Trailer

‘Course, what’s a weekend in the country without inviting one slutty bimbo and one hot-but-no-nookie-likely girl over for a party?

Except it turns out that Grandpa was a crazy, zombie-virus-creating scientist, and pretty soon everybody’s zombie bait.

Nineteen dead bodies. Eight breasts. One beast. No giant katydids.

One chase through the woods. One chase up to the roof, with ledge jumping. Multiple ominous flocks of CGI birds. Multiple dead crows. One donut-chewing cop. The nastiest meat processing plant EVER. Maggots. One force-fed meatball with a side of dead rat. Cucumber-slicing. Absinthe-drinking. Wineglass-stacking. Aardvarking, with light bondage. Voyeurism. Attempted suicide. Motor vehicle destruction. Two explosions. Arm-biting. Multiple Viking funerals. Neck-chomping. Multiple funky skin conditions. Basin-flinging. Pseudo-scientific babble. One “hyper virus.” Intestine spillage. Quarantine, with light bondage. One flesh-eating zombie cop. Neck-stomping. Zombie electrocution. One slutty girl rampage. One successful suicide. Zombie wrasslin’. CGI bird attack. One swan dive off the roof. Decontamination-scrubbing. Gratuitous gore-covered cuckoo clock. Gratuitous blood sampling. Sledgehammer Fu. Handgun Fu, with brain splattering. Shotgun Fu. Nightstick Fu. Homemade flamethrower Fu.

Drive-In Academy Award nominations for Philipp Danne as the sensitive Robert, for saying, “You think you can stop the virus? Nothing can stop the virus!”; Marvin Gronen as the cool Patrick, for saying, “Dude!”; Nikolas Juergens, who steals the movie as the uptight, more than a little creepy Eugene, for saying,“What do you know? Dissecting is the perfect training.” and “There’s a solution for everything in your happy little world.”; Birthe Wolter, as good girl Marlene, for saying, “He passed away quickly, but the birds found him first.”; and Anna Breuer as the slutty Vanessa, for being willing to pop her top, and for saying, “If you don’t send somebody over here right now, there’s gonna be a lot of dead people, and it’s gonna be your fault!”

Three stars.
